For Dr. Gunitskiy prevention of cavities is of utmost importance

 While brushing and flossing are two of the most important daily habits for maintaining healthy teeth and gums -- there are things ways to decrease the prevalence of oral diseases. Dr. Gunitskiy have helped many kids and adults alike to prevent cavities before they form

Who among us has not faced a cavity before? Cavity is the damage to the hard parts of the tooth, which is accompanied by demineralization.  Gunitskiy Family Dentistry has a wealth of experience in helping people with cavities in a gentle and pain free way in London. It is well known that proper oral hygienic care is an effective factor in the prevention of dental cavities and periodontal disease.

How does a cavity form/develop?

Tooth decay (cavity) is caused by bacteria that secrete acids that damage enamel. Without brushing our teeth, we leave food, which is a source of nutrients for the microorganisms. During the day, soft plaque forms. In a few days, due to the mineralizing ability of saliva, tartar is formed, which we ourselves, without the help of a dentist, can no longer be removed. Dental plaque, adhering tightly to the surface of the tooth, allows bacteria to eat away at hard dental tissues with the help of acids, thus forming a cavity. If you do not go to the dentist in time, the destruction will go deeper and the pulp may get affected, which ultimately can lead to needing a root canal treatment or even worse, the loss of the tooth.

The causes of cavities can be:
  • insufficient oral care and non-compliance with the rule of two-time brushing of teeth;

  • heredity;

  • malnutrition and the lack of a sufficient amount of protein, vitamins, fluoride and other trace elements in the diet;

  • abuse of carbohydrates, because they are the main food of microbes, which they process into organic acids.

Dr. Gunitskiy distinguishes between several stages of cavity development. Each stage has its own treatment modality.

Initial/superficial stage

At the initial stage, when there is no obvious damage to the tooth, but there is only a speck of white color, Dr. Gunitskiy will suggest to remove plaque and get rid of tartar. Next, a special preparation is applied to the tooth, which contains calcium and fluoride. Thus, at this stage, remineralizing therapy is performed. This treatment is inexpensive and saves you money.

After such treatment of cavities, it is very important to carefully observe oral hygiene and visit our dental office again after a couple of months to make sure that cavity processes have stopped.

Enamel Stage

This is already a damage to the enamel, however using special medications and techniques that Dr. Gunitskiy utilizes at his office, the process of cavity formation may still be arrested. Please contact Dr. Gunitskiy as soon as possible if you suspect you may have cavities.

Dentinal Stage

Dentinal cavity: Once that cavity reaches the second layer of the tooth called dentin, the process becomes irreversible and a removing the cavity and filling it is the treatment. At this stage the cavity may spread more rapidly throughout the tooth. The patient may still not experience pain, only the appearance of a short-term reaction to cold, sweet or sour, or hot is possible. The essence of the treatment of dental caries is to remove the affected tissues from the cavity and fill the tooth.

How cavities are treated?
  • It all starts with an examination of the affected areas. Dr. Guntiskiy will examine the jaws, the shade of the composite material is selected, and cleaning is performed.

  • After the inspection, the procedure itself begins. Freezing is administered, although it is not always used.

  • The affected areas are drilled out, treated with special medications to destroy microorganisms. If necessary, a pin is installed.

  • The form is restored using a filling material that is carefully placed and shaped, which is illuminated with a special blue light.

  • At the final stage, correction with grinding and polishing is carried out.

Pain-free dental treatment

A deep cavity is a dangerous condition, because in especially advanced cases it leads to the removal of a damaged tooth. If you come to the dentist in time, the dentist will be able to diagnose and save the tooth. Painless treatment is provided using modern pain relievers, modern freezing and is carried out in one day. Treatment consists in cleansing the tooth cavity from softened dentin and treating the tooth with special medications and a filling.  In case where the pulp is damaged, it is necessary to remove it and clean the root canals to eliminate the infection.

Anterior teeth treatment

A cavity on the front teeth also causes an aesthetic problem. A deep cavity can lead to chipping of part of the tooth. Treatment of the upper anterior teeth requires great professionalism and accurate matching of the color of the filling material to the natural tone of the patient's teeth. Dr. Gunitskiy enjoys helping his patients restore their beautiful smiles.
